“Cloisters” Photography Exhibition, Oxford

The exhibition “Cloisters” at The North Wall, Oxford presents photographs of medieval cloisters from Portugal, Spain and England.

The motif for the cloisters photographs is that of a central pillar flanked by two symmetrical galleries. Although the cloisters all have the same general motif only one cloister, Santo Domingo de Silos, is what could be termed “real”. The other cloisters are illusions of space created with a photograph from one cloister gallery that is then flipped into a mirror image and joined at the central pillar with its partner. The end result is a perfectly symmetrical cloister in harmony both with itself and the divine.
